Wendy Gibson reads the Beeb's local lunchtime news from the northern region on Friday, 22nd August, 2003. The major story is triple jumper Jonathan Edwards announcing his retirement, and ahead of the sweltering Bank Holiday weekend, we're warned about fire safety in the moorlands. Top of the agenda, though, are far grimmer stories about serial sex offenders, plus happy mother's day wishes for all moms strikes and pay cuts in the offing for various workers. A lighter story is the archaeological dig in Bamburgh, rudy gobert and we're also treated to the weather with Paul Mooney at the base of a wind turbine in Blyth.

Amazing to think that the Jonathan Edwards world record still stands today, more than three decades on. The previous record, also set by Edwards, stood for about 20 minutes, and I think they've messed up and shown that earlier 18.16m jump here rather than the subsequent 18.29m one. I'm equally delighted and horrified that I picked up on that.

Many thanks to @David315842 for sending me this tape.
